During the covid pandemic, the university bought an extended licence for Zoom that was used by employees and students for online meetings and remote learning. In the meantime, we worked hard to implement Microsoft 365 as the default software package for productivity and (online) collaboration.
By now, all employees and students of Radboud University have access to Microsoft 365, which contains the software Teams Meetings for online video meetings, such as video conferences. Virtual Classroom was already available for online lectures. The licence for Zoom has thus become unnecessary.
Video conferencing
Microsoft Teams
Microsoft Teams is an online collaborative tool. With this software, you can chat with people within and outside Radboud University, make (video) calls, hold online meetings, manage tasks and schedules, and collaborate on documents in real time. Microsoft Teams is installed by default on Radboud workstations and is easy to use with your Radboud account.
Zoom basic licence
From 1 September onwards, video conferences in Zoom wil be limited to meetings of 40 minutes with a maximum of 100 participants. New accounts will no longer be distributed. Current users can still log in, but have fewer functionalities available. All users were notified, this Spring.
Giving online lectures
Virtual Classroom
Brightspace contains the software Virtual Classroom with which you can give online lectures. You can plan the meeting via Brightspace, and the link is then automatically shared with students in a Brightspace course. You can use Virtual Classroom for lectures with up to 150 participants.
Microsoft Teams Meetings
You can also use Teams Meetings for lecture groups larger than 150 participants. You plan the meeting in your Outlook agenda and share the link with your students via Brightspace.
On the teacher website, you will find more information on how to schedule a lecture via Teams Meetings or Virtual Classroom and what functionalities are available. We are currently working on guidelines and practices for the use of video software in online lectures. We will publish more information on this shortly in the Radboud University's teacher website. In support, we will offer a presentation on giving online lectures specifically for lecturers in June and September.
