With the implementation of the LED's GO project, Radboud University is saving 65% on electrical energy for lighting. In the Huygens, Grotius, University Library and Elinor Ostrom/Gymnasion buildings, conventional lighting will be replaced by sustainable LED lighting.

LED lighting is much more energy-efficient than conventional lighting, which is good for the environment. However, it also provides considerable cost savings. Energy costs for lighting decrease, and because this sustainable lighting has a much longer lifespan than traditional lighting, maintenance costs also go down. Moreover, the bright lighting provides a pleasant (working) environment for employees, students and visitors.

Saving

LED's GO includes the replacement of 11,320 luminaires and delivers total savings of 1,730,000 kWh per year. This saving is comparable to the average annual consumption of 700 households.

Radboud University's energy policy targets 2% absolute energy savings per year. The energy programme 2021-2024 gives concrete substance to the energy reduction ambitions, including LED lighting measures.

Implementation

The implementation of LED's GO involves dismantling or converting existing standard luminaires and installing and connecting the LED luminaires. About 30 per cent of the existing luminaires can be made suitable for LED lamps with a modification. The luminaires that are not suitable will be replaced and disposed of and recycled in an environmentally friendly way by the supplier.

Implementation of the total project will take about a year. In coordination with users, the work will be carried out as much as possible during normal operations. To minimise inconvenience, work will be clustered per building section or floor. For teaching areas, the work will be carried out during off-peak periods, at weekends or in the evenings. The building manager informs users in advance about the planning of work in specific areas.

Sustainability grant

The new 'Subsidieregeling duurzaam maatschappelijk vastgoed (DUMAVA)' assists owners of existing social real estate with the cost of making them more sustainable. The LED's GO project meets the set conditions and therefore Radboud University will receive a grant of €730,000 to meet the costs of this sustainability of campus buildings.
