Trainings on proposal writing
These trainings are designed for researchers who are already working on proposals or who want to apply for specific calls. The hands-on trainings cover various aspects of funding proposal writing. The aim of the trainings is to prepare researchers for upcoming funding programmes (e.g. Horizon Europe) and to improve the quality of applications. There are three training courses. Depending on your experience with proposal writing, you can choose one of the trainings.
Would you like to sign up for one of the trainings? Then send an e-mail with your name and organisational unit to grantsupport [at] ru.nl.
Beginner: Designing a proposal for Horizon Europe
For whom: researchers with no/limited previous experience in funding proposal writing.
Content: you will work with up to 10-20 researchers on exercises focusing on the logic of the call and the topic. This includes how to develop a coherent proposal in line with the call. Each section has an introductory explanation by grant advisors prior to the exercises.
Duration: 2.5 hours in one day or 2 hours in two days.
Expected results: the group will analyse the selected call, formulate an overall project idea and fill in a number of proposal sections - maximum 3 pages.
Intermediate: Writing a proposal step by step
For whom: researchers with previous experience with FP7/H2020, interested in applying as coordinator/partner
What: Up to 20 researchers will work in smaller groups on a selected proposal; the group will do exercises in formulating and refining proposal elements (objectives, ambition, impact path, work packages, dissemination, exploitation and communication activities) to adapt the project idea and impact. Understanding the logic of the call and the topic is required.
Duration: 3.5 hours in one day or sessions of 2 hours over 2-3 days
Expected results: draft proposal (about 10 pages) with key elements for each part of the proposal.
Advanced: Writing specific proposals for Horizon Europe

What: up to 10 researchers working on improving specific parts of their proposal.
Duration: 1.5 hours per section (several sections can be combined)
Expected results: researchers learning how to write specific sections, working on concepts (one page per section, e.g. bullet points, tables, structure established, 2-3 paragraphs finished).
