A video can be an interesting tool to get a message across to the target audience in a targeted way. Since making a video is a time-consuming and costly process, it is important to think carefully beforehand whether a video is the right way to communicate the message. Does the investment match the impact the video will deliver? To determine whether creating a video is the right choice a set of guidelines is provided below.
Guidelines
- Purpose: the goal is clear and defined. It has been considered whether video is the right medium to achieve this goal.
- Target group: the video focuses on making an impact on a large target group: all students (of a faculty), all employees (of a faculty), all international students, all prospective students (of a faculty), all potential employees for a job area (e.g. IT) or prominent vacancy (e.g. director).
- Channels: it is clear which channels will be used to reach the target group. For these channels, video is the appropriate medium to use.
- Time investment: creating a video takes time, both for the creator and the client. As the client, you need to allocate time for submitting a well-prepared request, a briefing session with the video team, developing the script, contacting potential actors, arrange locations and provide feedback. Keep this in mind when when considering whether to create a video and start early. This will ensure there is enough time to produce a high-quality video that contributes to the goal.
