By encrypting a file, you ensure that only authorised people can open it, for example by first entering a password. Adobe Acrobat, Word and Excel have their own encryption mechanisms. You can find more information in the help function of these programs.
You can also use special programs to encrypt files, such as 7-Zip. This program is available for Windows and can be installed for free at home. It is also available on workstations on campus.
