Open Access books are becoming more prevalent, but the transition to Open Access is not as far along for books as it for journal articles. To publish a book Open Access, the author must pay book processing charges (BPCs). The BPCs can vary widely between (commercial) publishers: from €5.000,- to €20.000,-. There are no national or institutional deals that give authors a discount on the BPCs. However, there are funds available for publishing Open Access books, for example via NWO’s Open Access books program. In addition to (commercial) publishers, there are community-driven initiatives for publishing open access books: Diamond Open Access publishers.
Additionally, single chapters from edited volumes can be made public six months after first publication in the Radboud Repository via Taverne, without cost for the author. To do this, authors can upload the publisher’s version of the chapter via RIS or directly via the Radboud Repository. If you have questions or problems with uploading a chapter, get in touch with the Radboud Repository via repository [at] ubn.ru.nl (repository[at]ubn[dot]ru[dot]nl).
