Roadmap for publishing journals with Radboud University Press

Radboud University Press gives editors the opportunity to publish their academic journals free of charge. These are the steps you will undertake in the process of publishing your journal with Radboud University Press.

  1. 1. Initial contact

Whether you plan to transfer an existing journal or want to start up a new journal, you can contact Radboud University Press at any time in the development process. We will then determine whether the project is suitable for publication through Radboud University Press. After you have contacted us, we will hold an introductory meeting to discuss the possibilities of publishing with Radboud University Press.

  2. 2. Desk review

After the introductory meeting, you will receive a questionnaire about the details of your publication. A member of the scientific editorial board of Radboud University Press, who is an expert in the relevant field, will use the questionnaire to check whether the journal is suitable for publication with Radboud University Press. This is followed by a conversation between Radboud University Press and you about conducting peer reviews for your journal. Having a peer review procedure is a necessity for maintaining the scientific quality of your journal. Radboud University Press can advise on this.

  3. 3. Publication proposal and production schedule

If your project is approved by the scientific editorial board of Radboud University Press, you will receive a publication proposal and detailed production schedule. Additionally, you will speak with the editorial board of Radboud University Press about your peer review framework. If you agree with the proposal and schedule, Radboud University Press will send you a contract. There will be plenty of room for personal attention and consultation during the production process so that both you and Radboud University Press will feel comfortable working together.

  4. 4. Peer review

Radboud University Press will handle the administrative side of transferring a journal from another publisher and when setting up a new journal. Afterwards, your journal will receive its own page on the online Open Journals platform, along with its own content management system. This enables you to streamline the assessment and processing of submitted articles, thereby improving the workflow of the journal. Radboud University Press also offers an annual stipend of 1000 euros for editorial assistance. Editorial assistance that exceeds this cost, as well as other costs, have to be covered by the editors themselves.

  5. 5. Production

The exact details of the production process depend on your needs as an editor, as well as those of the magazine you are publishing. If you are developing a new journal, the production process will be different than it would be if you were transferring a journal to Radboud University Press from another publisher. Radboud University Press will contact you to discuss your wishes and expectations. For example, when publishing a journal, you can choose between publishing periodic issues and publishing individual articles as soon as they are ready.

Please note: Radboud University Press uses a standardised template for the design of the magazine's interior. There is room for personalization within this template, for example with your own logo and colour choice.

  6. 6. Marketing

Once the design and interior of your journal has been finalised, it is time for your journal to be published. Radboud University Press will aid in promoting and marketing your journal:

    • Your publication will be shared through the public channels of Radboud University Press, including our website and LinkedIn page.
    • Radboud University Press can assist in setting up a newsletter for your journal.
    • Radboud University Press can advise and support in the promotion of the journal in your own network.
    • If you choose to organise a journal launch, Radboud University Press will be present at the event.

It is not possible to offer print subscriptions to journals if you publish through Radboud University Press.

  7. 7. Discoverability and findability

Radboud University Press will ensure that your publication is easily findable through the use of proper indexing and archiving. This makes your work accessible to scientists and other interested parties, who will be able to view your publication free of charge. Radboud University Press will handle all costs and financial settlements related to the (online) publication of your book.

  8. 8. Evaluation

At the end of each year, you will evaluate the production of the journal with Radboud University Press. You will also be asked to provide a planning for the upcoming year.
