The world seems to be made by men. But nothing could be further from the truth. In the history of philosophy and science, women play an important but invisible role until recently. Come hear from renowned German philosopher Ruth Hagengruber and learn more about the great women in philosophy and science.
Invisible geniuses
In the past, women's work was often ignored or appropriated by men. Consider Hypatia of Alexandria, a fourth-century mathematician and philosopher who did pioneering work in astronomy and mathematics but was unknown until recently. In recent history, too, we find examples of women whose ideas have been appropriated by male colleagues. Like Rosalind Franklin whose important contribution to understanding the molecular structure of DNA was long ignored.
Different world
Since Simone de Beauvoir's The Second Sex, there has finally been plenty of discussion about what role women should play in society. Ruth Hagengruber argues that the world would be different today if we had taken the thinking of all those women seriously for centuries.
What can the perspective of women thinkers add? After her lecture, Ruth Hagengruber will discuss how women thinkers can teach us to see the world differently and how we can restore the scientific and philosophical canon.
