Birth leave for partners

If your partner gives birth, you are entitled to:  

  • Two days of leave during the birth
  • One working week of birth leave
  • Five working weeks of additional birth leave

If you live in a country other than the Netherlands and are socially insured there, other rights may apply to you. In that case, contact your department's HR officer.

Leave during the birth

You are entitled to two days of leave from the day that your partner gives birth. 

Requests

You will need to notify your supervisor and the HR officer from your department about the birth.

Birth leave for partners 

After your partner has given birth, you will be entitled to one working week of leave. This period of leave can be taken up to four weeks after your partner has given birth.

Requests

If you wish to take birth leave, you will need to notify your supervisor four weeks in advance. If you are unable to notify them, try to let them know about the birth as soon as possible. You will also need to notify the HR officer from your department about the birth.

Additional birth leave for partners 

After you have taken your birth leave, you will be entitled to five weeks of additional birth leave (in accordance with your contract of employment). This period of leave can be taken up to six months after your partner has given birth. 

Requests 

You will need to notify your supervisor about your intention to take additional birth leave at the same time that you submit your request for regular birth leave. You will also need to notify the HR officer from your department about this request.
