Registration at the municipality

After your arrival in the Netherlands you have to make an appointment with the municipality of Nijmegen or the city you will live in during your stay in the Netherlands. The length of your stay determines the way you will be registered by the municipality.

I will stay up to four months

If your stay in the Netherlands is no longer than four months, you can register with the Registration of Non-Residents (RNI). You are required to make an appointment with the Municipality of Nijmegen  for your RNI. Once you have registered, you will receive a Citizen Service Number (BSN). This is a personal number that government agencies and other official bodies use in their communications with citizens. You will receive a letter of confirmation, which also states your Citizen Service Number. We strongly recommend to keep this letter with your BSN in a safe place.

How to schedule an appointment with the municipality of Nijmegen

Please note that making an appointment only works on a PC or laptop.

Use the municipality’s online tool to schedule an appointment between 18 August til 19 September 2025. The location will be announced later.

Make sure to fill out the form ‘student first registration’ (available in step 2) whilst you are booking the appointment. If the municipality does not receive this filled out form before your appointment, this causes huge delays.

Documents you need to bring to the appointment:

  • Valid ID (passport or in case of EU nationality an ID card);
  • In case of non-EU nationality: Dutch residence permit or a print out in colour of the approval letter of your (MVV and) residence permit. In case of intra EU-mobility, the EU residence permit card and a print out in colour of the EU-mobility approval letter;
  • A printed version of your rental or purchase contract of the room or house you are living in, signed by both parties.

If you cannot provide a rental or purchase contract, please bring:

  • Written permission from the main inhabitant, dated and signed;
  • Signed copy in colour of identity card or passport of the main inhabitant.
