Validity residence permit during your studies

Unless we have taken over your residence permit from another educational institution, your permit is valid for the nominal duration of your studiesIf you have a Dutch residence permit, you must have your main residency in the Netherlands. This means that you live in the Netherlands and spend most of your time here. As a Bachelor or (Pre-)Master student you must keep your educational progress adequate to maintain the validity of your residence permit.

Study progress Bachelor's and Master's students

In order to retain your residence permit, your educational progress must be adequate. As a degree Bachelor’s or Master’s student, you must attain at least 50% of the number of study points (EC's) per study year. Radboud University will check your study progress at the end of every study year and will also ask you for a signed statement concerning sufficient financial means and valid insurance for the next academic year. If your progress is insufficient, Student Admissions will notify the IND (the Dutch Immigration and Naturalisation Serviceand your permit will be withdrawn.

If you undertake temporary study stays abroad (inside or outside the EU) during your study period at Radboud University, this study progress requirement remains applicable.

Study progress Pre-Master's students

The IND (the Dutch Immigration and Naturalisation Service) applies specific rules for Pre-Master’s students: a Pre-Master’s is considered by the IND to be a preparatory study. For this programme students need to complete all subjects within the nominal duration of the programme (i.e. all study points/credits). A residence permit for a preparatory study cannot be extended. If you do not complete the programme within the nominal duration, Student Admissions will notify the IND and your permit will be withdrawn.

Main residency

If you have a Dutch residence permit, you must have your main residency in the Netherlands. This means that you live in the Netherlands and spend most of your time here.

Please also carefully read the conditions of your insurance in case you are leaving the Netherlands. Aon private student insurance, for instance, has set conditions for the maximum number of days abroad.

Staying outside of the Netherlands for study purposes

With a study permit you may stay outside the Netherlands for a maximum of one continuous year as long as your residence permit is valid. This is allowed if you are temporarily going abroad for education so you can complete your studies in the Netherlands.

Intra-EU mobility student (Directive (EU) 2016/801)

With a Dutch residence permit for study you can study temporarily in a different EU country for a maximum of 360 days in total. The IND adds up any separate periods. Radboud University has to notify the IND using the intra-EU moblity (outgoing student) procedure. You will be contacted by the visa team of Student Admissions for the EU mobility procedure if you have submitted the application for study abroad in Osiris. Should you have not been contacted by the visa team of Student Admissions two months before going abroad, please contact the visa team at visa [at] io.ru.nl

Deregistering at the municipality

If you leave the Netherlands for more than 8 months or permanently, you have to deregister from the municipality. Contact the municipality you live in for more information.

Extension residence permit

An extension of your residence permit is only possible in case of adequate study progress. If you wish to extend your residence permit for study purposes, please contact the visa team of Student Admissions. The fee for an extension is 210 euros (subject to change). You will have to upload several documents in OSIRIS to apply for an extension. Student Admissions will support you with this application. Please note that no extension is possible for a preparatory study (Pre-Master’s programme).
