Insurance for international students

When studying in the Netherlands, it is essential that you obtain the appropriate insurance. Finding out which insurance applies can be challenging, as the requirements differ for students from different countries of origin. The form below will help guide you towards the insurance that applies to you specifically.

Which insurance do I need?

Are you employed in a paid job?

International students who have a paid internship for which they are paid at least as much as the Dutch minimum wage or who have a part-time job need to register for Dutch public health insurance.

In addition, it is advised to register for additional insurances, such as travel insurance and/or liability insurance, like AON Start.

Are you an EEA citizen?
EEA stands for European Economic Area. There are 30 EEA countries: The 27 EU member states, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway
Do you have a EHIC, a European Health Insurance Card?

EEA students who are not employed in the Netherlands or who do not have a paid internship with at least a minimum wage income, are not eligible for Dutch public health insurance but receive health coverage through the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).

In most cases, EHIC only partly covers your health expenses and has a limited duration for coverage. It is therefore important to check which elements are not included in your coverage with your insurance company in your home country.

More about EHIC coverage

To ensure additional coverage in case of health-related expenses are made, additional insurance coverage is strongly advised. In addition to the basic coverage provided by EHIC, the AON Start+ package insures travel and stay, as well as some additional medical costs that are not covered under your normal health insurance (EHIC).

If you are not eligible to receive a European Health Insurance Card a private insurer will be able to cover you. The AON Complete+ package will provide you not only with basic health insurance, but also with travel insurance and liability insurance.
