If you stay in the Netherlands longer than 90 days, you will probably need a residence permit. Radboud University will apply for a residence permit before your arrival in the Netherlands. In this procedure Student Admissions requires a copy of your valid passport, a declaration of criminal record, a declaration of intent to undergo a tuberculosis test and proof that you can support yourself financially when applying for your residence permit.
Copy of your valid passport
Students are advised to have a passport which is valid during your whole stay in the Netherlands. Minimum validity requirements are:
- September intake: passport should be valid until 1 January the next year.
- February intake: passport should be valid until 1 July of that year.
Antecedents Certificate
By signing this declaration you declare that you have no criminal record. As soon as Student Admissions have provided you with access to the visa application in OSIRIS Application, you can download this form from the IND website, complete it and upload it in OSIRIS.
Declaration of intention to undergo a Tuberculosis test
Unless your nationality is exempted, you have to do a tuberculosis test (TB test) after your arrival in the Netherlands. Several countries are exempted from undergoing a TB test. You can find these exempted countries here.
If you need to do a TB test, you can download the declaration form from the IND website, complete it and upload it in OSIRIS as soon as Student Admissions have provided you with access to the visa application in Osiris Application.
After your arrival in the Netherlands, Student Admissions will inform the organization that will carry out this test (the GGD). The GGD will contact you to arrange an appointment.
Proof that you can support yourself financially
As part of the visa application, you need to prove enough financial means to study and provide in your living expenses. Next to the tuition fee you need at least 960 euros (subject to change) for each month of residence in the Netherlands (i.e living expenses). Exchange students do not have to prove/pay tuition fee.
As financial statements may not be older than three months at the time of filing the visa application with the IND, Student Admissions advises you not to start collecting these documents in a too early stage.
There are four options available to prove your living expenses and/or tuition fee. You can select one or more options during your visa application. More detailed information will be sent to you by Student Admissions at the start of the visa application process.
A grant letter allows you to prove that you are receiving a scholarship. The grant letter should contain the following details:
- it should be clear who provides the grant;
- it should be clear the grant is awarded to you, at least your name should be mentioned;
- the exact start and end date of the grant should be mentioned;
- the amount of the grant should be specified;
- the name of the grant programme should be mentioned;
- the grant letter should contain the date of issue.
When you receive a grant that constitutes a (partial) tuition fee waiver, the letter does not have to state a monthly amount. An explanation that the tuition fee is waived or lowered by obtaining this grant is sufficient.
With a bank declaration from your own bank account, you can prove that you can support yourself. The bank declaration should contain the following details:
- the declaration should be printed on headed paper from the bank (mentioning at least the name, address and phone number of the bank);
- the name of the account holder should be mentioned;
- the declaration should be of a recent date (not older than three months);
- the full account number must be mentioned;
- the current balance should be mentioned, and must be sufficient to prove the total amount of your financial means;
- the bank must confirm the balance is freely available (current or savings account);
- the declaration must be in English, Dutch, German or French. If this is not the case, a translation by a sworn translation is required (and both the original and translation must be provided);
- a date and place of issue should be mentioned.
Please find an example of the bank declaration below. Please note that these are examples. When the bank is able to provide a complementary letter which contains the required information, this is acceptable as well. Please note that we also ask you to upload a bank statement of the last three months.
Example bank declaration self-supporting
If you indicate that you have a sponsor not living in the Netherlands in OSIRIS you will need to provide the following three documents:
- A bank declaration of your sponsor (look above for more information). If you select this option in OSIRIS you will find an example of a bank declaration. Please make sure the bank declaration meets all the requirements as mentioned.
- A statement of financial support. You will find a blank copy of this form on the IND website. You will need to upload a filled out form that contains a signature written by pen from your sponsor. Please note that in case the bank account of the bank declaration of your sponsor is owned by multiple people, all owners of the bank account need to sign a statement of financial support.
- A scan of a proof of ID of your sponsor. This can be a valid id-card, a valid passport or in some cases a valid drivers license and the information on the document must be in English, German, French or Dutch. A drivers license is only permitted in case this document is a valid proof of ID in your home country, e.g. in the USA. Please note that in case the bank account of the bank declaration of your sponsor is owned by multiple people, all owners of the bank account need to provide a proof of ID.
Please note that the documents above apply to a sponsor living abroad.
You can transfer your living expenses to Radboud University. You can transfer the total amount, or – if you only need to prove an additional part next to a grant you will be receiving – you can transfer a partial amount. If you indicate in your visa application that you wish to transfer the living expenses you will find instructions and bank information of Radboud University in the application. You will be asked to upload a proof of payment in your visa application. Please make sure to mention your student number in the description of the transfer.
Please note that the Living Expenses are not transferred to the same bank account as the tuition fee, so please do not transfer the two amounts at the same time or into the same account, unless you are instructed to do so by the visa team.
After your arrival and after you have opened a Dutch bank account and registered at the local administration and acquired a Dutch citizen number (BSN), Radboud University will transfer your living expenses to your Dutch bank account.
Please note that for students from Bangladesh, Cameroon, China (except special administrative regions of China and the Republic of China), Nepal, Nigeria and Pakistan it is mandatory to transfer the money to Radboud University if you do not receive a grant or if the grant does not cover the total amount of living expenses.
