Continued commitment
The co-determination bodies have had a turbulent month, to say the least. The governance crisis at the Faculty of Law demanded a lot of attention from the University Student Council, as we did not agree at all with the College van Bestuur's (Executive Board, CvB) course of action and are increasingly concerned about the governance culture at this university. After much deliberation, the Universitaire Gezamenlijke Vergadering therefore decided to initiate a dispute with the CvB, in order to clarify the procedures and whether these were properly followed in the installation of the interim dean, who has since resigned.
In addition, since the beginning of this academic year, we have been struggling with the house rules and guidelines for demonstrations that the university wants to implement. In short, we have very different ideas about what should and should not be included in such documents - which is why we have been having many long and extensive recurring discussions regarding this topic in every cycle.
Harmonisation and centralisation
However, we do not let difficult conversations get us down and we cheerfully continue with our own projects and initiatives! Last cycle, for example, we submitted a notition on our desire for more harmonisation between the faculties. This means that we would like to see, for example, the annual timetable and the policy regarding recording lectures, two things that are currently regulated separately by each faculty, to be more uniform. We also hope that in the future, courses will have the same number of credits, making it easier to follow courses at other faculties. Both students and staff have long felt the need for more centralisation, and the USC fully supports this.
Student elections
Another fun and exciting prospect: the elections! From 20 to 26 May, students can once again cast their votes for various participation bodies. If you'd like to take part in the elections or even run for the USC, don't hesitate to approach us (usr [at] ru.nl (usr[at]ru[dot]nl)) or the various student parties!
