Submit a request to the examination board (Social Sciences)

If you believe you have valid reasons to qualify for an exception to the Education and Examination Regulations (EER) of your programme, you can submit a request to the examination board. The examination board has the authority to make exceptions for individual students in compelling circumstances.

Tasks of the Examination Board

Are you planning to submit a request to the examination board? First, consult your student advisor. They can advise you on the possibilities and potential outcomes of your request. They can also help you with drafting your letter.

You may also lodge an appeal with the Examinations Appeals Board against decisions made by the Examination Board. In that case, it's also recommended that you first consult your student advisor. They can inform you about the procedure and advise you on the most appropriate support.

Artificial Intelligence

Write a neat and formal email;
Always submit a request individually. Submitting a request (also) on behalf of another student is not allowed;
A request is always a one-off request;
Clearly explain why you think an exception should be made for you. The chance that your request will be granted increases if:
- 1) you can explain that enforcing the rules will have disproportionately negative consequences for you; or
- 2) if you can demonstrate that exceptional circumstances apply to you that make it difficult for you to perform within the usual rules.

The Examination Board will assess your request based on your submitted request and any accompanying ‘evidence’.

Correspondence to the Examination Board must comply with the following:

Only email from your ru.nl mail address will be processed;
Always state your student number;
If your request concerns a course, state the course name and course code.
The Examination Board is responsible for all courses with codes SOW-BKI and SOW-MKI and for compulsory courses of other faculties (including ‘restricted electives’). For non-SOW courses, you should write to the Examination Board of that faculty.

The Examination Board tries to inform you as soon as possible and tries to give an answer within ten days (except for the period in the summer holidays). If possible, you will receive notification earlier.

Anthropology and Development Studies

Before submitting a request to the Examination Board, it is advisable first to consult the student advisor. They will advise you on the possibilities of your request. Additionally, it is useful to familiarise yourself with the content of the Education and Examination Regulations (EER) and the Rules and Regulations (R&R).

Would you like to submit a request to the Examination Board? Please express this in the form of a formal letter in Word format. Send your Word document as an attachment by email to: examencommissie_caos [at] maw.ru.nl. When doing so, please consider the following points:

Be factual and to the point; make sure it is clear what your request is about so that the examination board knows what they need to decide on;
Ensure that all essential information (e.g. student number, date of request, and if relevant, course name, course code, and name of the course coordinator) is included in the letter;
You must always submit a request individually. It is not permitted to submit a request (also) on behalf of another student;
A request can only be submitted once;
In case you believe an exception should be made for you, please indicate why you feel this is warranted. The chance that your request will be granted will increase if 1) you can explain that enforcing the rules will have disproportionately negative consequences for you, and/or 2) you can demonstrate that exceptional circumstances apply to you, which make it difficult to perform within the standard regulations. If personal circumstances have already been documented with the student advisor and/or student counsellor, you may refer to this for convenience. The Examination Board will assess your request based on the information you have provided and any supporting documents submitted (for instance, in the case of a request for exemption from a course).

The Examination Board aims to respond to your request as soon as possible. However, in the case of complex requests, it may take up to six weeks for you to receive a decision, in accordance with the deadlines stated in the R&R.

Pedagogical Sciences / Educational Sciences

The Examination Board is responsible for assessment within the Bachelor’s and Master’s programme in Pedagogical Sciences, Educational Sciences, and Pedagogical Sciences of Primary Education.

Before writing a request to the Examination Board, it is wise to consult one of the student advisors first. They will advise you on the possibilities of your request. It is also useful to acquaint yourself with the content of the Education and Examination Regulations (EER) of your study programme.

Requests to the Examination Board must always include the following:

First and last name
Student number (requests without a student number will not be dealt with)
Student email address (only ru.nl email address)
Date
Always describe clearly in your request what it concerns; e.g. an extra examination opportunity (please state course name and course code) or an exemption*.

*When applying for an exemption, always use the exemption form.

If you believe you have reasonable grounds that enable you to qualify for an exemption from the Education and Examination Regulations (EER), you can submit a request to the Examination Board. In the case of serious personal circumstances, the Examination Board has the authority to make an exception for individual students.

Here are some tips and requirements:

Email your request from your student email address, preferably in letter form (PDF) to the Examination Board: examencommissie [at] psych.ru.nl.
Include your name, address and student number.
In the subject line of your email, clearly state the type of request, course name and course code.
Restrict yourself to a maximum of two A4 sheets to explain your situation concisely and clearly and state why your request should be granted.
