Suspicious emails or ‘phishing’

If you receive an email from an unknown sender asking you to share information, be alert. It could be phishing; this is an attempt to defraud by way of a digital scam. If you suspect that an email is phishing, you should never provide any personal or financial information. Phishing can also be carried out by text messaging.

Suspicious emails should be reported to the icthelpdesk [at] ru.nl (ICT Helpdesk). You should send the phishing email as an attachment to your own email. The ICT Helpdesk will then make sure that no other people receive this phishing email. Phishing scams can be recognised by the following characteristics:

  • The email will be from an unknown sender
  • The sender will request the recipient’s login, bank or credit card details
  • The email will include a link that refers to a website that differs to the one that the email has suggested. You can check the reliability of a link via the following website: www.checkjelinkje.nl.

Report phishing mail

In Outlook you will find a button to easily report a possible phishing e-mail. The email will be automatically checked by Proofpoint, the anti-phishing and -spam facility used by Radboud University. If it is a phishing email it will be removed from all RU mailboxes.
