As a general rule, you may only request an exemption before the start of the academic year or the second semester. Once an exemption has been granted, it cannot be revoked. You will therefore need to give careful prior consideration to whether you wish to request an exemption for a course.
Requesting an exemption for your pre-Master’s programme of study
Exemptions must be requested no later than 1 May for programmes that start on 1 September and no later than 1 October for programmes that start on 1 February. After this deadline, exempted courses will not be deducted from the pre-Master’s programme fee.
Transferring from another university to Radboud University
If you wish to transfer to Radboud University, you will need to submit a request to the Examination Board:
• If you have successfully completed a Bachelor’s degree from another university, you will need to attach the following documents to your request: a copy of your Bachelor’s diploma, a list of grades and a so-called ‘Bachelor’s declaration of civiel effect’ from your own university. This declaration should preferably indicate that the requirements of the Civiel Effect Covenant, which was signed on 22 March 2016, have been met.
In the case of a Master’s degree in Dutch Law, you must indicate which Master’s specialisation you wish to pursue at Radboud University. The Examination Board will then ascertain whether you need to eliminate any deficiencies before you can register.
• If you have successfully completed the first year of a degree programme at another university, that is, if you have completed the first 60 EC of the Bachelor’s examination programme, you will need to attach a copy of your propaedeutic certificate (if it has been awarded) and a list of grades to your request. The Examination Board will then ascertain whether you need to eliminate any deficiencies before you can register.
Individual exemptions
You can also request an individual exemption for one or more specific courses. You can do this for each separate course by using the Exemption Request Form (the Word download can be found on this page). Use the course information to determine which courses from your prior education are similar to courses at Radboud University in terms of literature and study credits. Your request for exemption should be accompanied by a letter or motivation letter that provides a list of the courses, whereby you clearly indicate the courses from your prior education that form the basis for why you are making your request. For each separate request, you will need to attach a copy of your qualification or certified list of grades as well as relevant information about the course (e.g. a reading list) that forms the basis for why you are requesting the exemption.
Exemptions that are granted in the first year of the Bachelor’s study programme will count towards the BSA (Binding Study Advice) standard. For example, if you received an exemption of 5 ECs for a course, these ECs will count towards meeting the BSA standard.
Please note that the content and study load for the courses that you have successfully completed, which form the basis for your request for the exemption, should be similar to the courses in question. This means that these courses must be worth at least the same number of ECs as the courses for which the exemption has been requested. This condition does not apply to requests for a partial exemption for courses after the first year of the Bachelor’s study programme.
Two Master’s programmes and/or Master’s specialisations
If you have registered for two Master’s programmes and/or Master’s specialisations in the 2023-2024 academic year or thereafter, paragraph 9 of Article 39 of the Education and Examination Regulations (EER) applies to you. If the same course has been included in both examination programmes, it can only be included once in an examination programme and it cannot serve as an exemption for the other examination programme. This means that you will need to choose other courses.
Exemptions after you have switched study programmes
If you are planning to switch study programmes, the following is relevant to your exemptions (the PDF download can be found on this page).
Exemption on the basis of a first-year diploma from a university of applied sciences degree programme
If you have you been admitted to the Bachelor of Law, European Law or Notarial Law on the basis of a first-year diploma from a university of applied sciences degree programme, you will not be able to submit a request for an exemption from a university-level Bachelor’s course on the basis of the courses that you passed at higher professional education level.
As a general rule, you may only request an exemption before the start of the academic year.
You can send your letter, request form and supporting documents by email to the Faculty of Law Student Administration: vrijstelling [at] jur.ru.nl.
