Sustainable Bachelor’s courses

Want to take sustainability courses during your Bachelor’s degree? Find out which courses you can take at your own faculty and at other faculties of the university.

For Students

Please be aware that the list provided on this webpage is updated before the beginning of the academic year, and discrepancies may occur. The authoritative source for the most accurate information remains the Osiris Sustainable Testimony catalogue

The courses listed below are open to all Bachelor’s students, regardless of academic background. Sustainable courses restricted to specific study programmes can be found in the Osiris catalogue.

Please note that some courses have admission requirements. Make sure you read the study guide carefully before registering for a course. Contact the lecturer or student advisor if you are unsure whether you are eligible to take a course.

Testimony

Did you delve into sustainable issues during your studies? As proof of this, you can get a sustainability certificate on your bachelor's degree.

For Teachers

If you would like your course to be considered on this list, please contact the Radboud Centre for Sustainability Challenges. Our team will evaluate the relevance of the course content in addressing sustainable challenges and Sustainability Development Goals as defined by the United Nations.

If you wish to remove your class from the list, please reach out to rcsc [at] ru.nl (rcsc[at]ru[dot]nl) so we can discuss this matter further.

Sustainable Development Goals

The sustainable courses correspond to the seventeen Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). For each course, the sustainability goal to which the course relates is indicated. If a course relates to four or more SDGs, this is indicated by ‘at least 4 SDGs’. The seventeen sustainability goals are listed below.

1. No poverty
2. Zero hunger
3. Good health and well-being
4. Quality education
5. Gender equality
6. Clean water and sanitation
7. Affordable and clean energy
8. Decent work and economic growth
9. Industry, innovation and infrastructure
10. Reduced inequalities
11. Sustainable cities and communities
12. Responsible consumption and production
13. Climate action
14. Life below water
15. Life on land
16. Peace, justice and strong institutions
17. Partnerships for the goals

An eighteenth SDG on animal health, welfare and rights has also been proposed. Read more about it here.

As the SDGs were proposed in the early 2010s, several upcoming sustainable topics were not well captured in the SDGs, though they do play an important role in sustainability research. Examples include topics surrounding AI, anthropocentrism and decolonization. Courses that do not directly link to SDGs, but do link to these sustainability topics are labelled by theme: Power relations (includes post-colonialism); Human-nature relation; Digitalization (includes AI, misinformation); Responsible research.
