Using laptops, phones and tablets

To follow your study programme, you need to have the appropriate devices. A laptop or tablet can generally be used for taking notes during lectures, but a lecturer may deviate from this rule. It is not allowed to use the laptop or tablet for other, non-academic purposes during lectures. You are not allowed to make audio or video recordings using any device (laptop, phone, iPad, etc.).

To ensure your laptop is suitable for studying, it must meet at least the following specifications:

Up-to-date Windows 11 or macOS
Webcam
Intel i5 processor (or comparable: AMD ryzen 5)
8 GB internal memory
256 GB SSD storage
Internet connection
13-inch display
Sufficient battery life

Additional requirements Computing Science

For the Computing Science study programme, the following configuration is recommended in addition to the above-mentioned features:

Intel i7 processor (or similar quality from AMD), which is not more than two years old
16 GB internal memory
512 GB SSD storage

Buying a laptop

You are free to choose where you buy your laptop. Students can download the F-Secure internet security package for free via SURFspot.

If you don't have the financial means to meet the laptop requirements of your faculty, please contact your Student Information Point.

Borrow a laptop

The Faculty of Science has a laptop share programme, which allows students to borrow a laptop on a day-to-day basis.

Laptop lending services at the Faculty of Social Sciences are currently under review. As a result, applications for a loan laptop are not being processed at this time.
