About us
At the Titus Brandsma Institute, we explore the role of mysticism, the church and spirituality in our society. We look at the different ways in which people give form and content to their spiritual quest. Spiritual culture in the past and present.
Our mission
Our research focuses on the many forms of Christian spirituality. The Titus Brandsma Institute stands for the academic study of spirituality in the light of the Christian tradition past and present, at the service of Church and society through publications, teaching and formation.
What do we do at the TBI?
Our research focuses on the many forms of Christian spirituality, as found for example in the Modern Devotion, in the texts of mystics such as Ruusbroec, Teresa of Avila or Simone Weil, or in the lives of religious in their monastic orders and congregations. We provide education in the field of spiritual guidance and formation based on these scientific insights, including for the Protestant Theological University (PThU).
Our people
Fifteen passionate staff members are the face of the TBI, showing in their work how Christian mysticism and spirituality can still be meaningful for our times, for understanding our culture and society, and for individual meaning.
History
Our research centre lends its name to Titus Brandsma. A versatile man who throughout his life focused on his fellow man who had less. Carmelite Brandsma was professor of philosophy and history of piety at Radboud University Nijmegen. The Titus Brandsma Institute (TBI) was founded in 1968 on the basis of a cooperation agreement between Radboud University Nijmegen and the Dutch Carmel Province in memory of Prof Titus Brandsma (1881-1942), a Carmelite.
