Social spirituality

The Titus Brandsma Institute's research line 'Social Spirituality' explores how spirituality takes shape in work and social life today. How is spirituality expressed in contemporary life and within social organisations?

To gain insight into this, the institute offers education and training aimed at describing, understanding and guiding people's spiritual process in different social contexts. Through the School of Spirituality, they can participate in courses, lectures and master classes associated with this line of research.

About this research

Research within this line of research has two distinct branches:

1. Philosophical-theological and qualitative-empirical research

This branch looks at the current meaning and relevance of the spiritual and mystical tradition in contemporary society and contemporary practices of spirituality in social organisations. The research is concerned with how spirituality takes shape (and can take shape) in the professional and social action of the present time. It concerns the study of lived everyday spirituality and the meaning people give to it.

From the lines of research Sources and foundations of Christian spirituality and mysticism and Spirituality of religious life, philosophical-theological and qualitative-empirical (especially narrative) research can particularly draw on

  • the focus on the practical mysticism and spirituality of the Modern Devotion
  • the different insights on the relationship between spirituality and lived practice in the different schools of spirituality
  • the reflection on the critical place of spirituality and mysticism in modern times, and
  • the way Titus Brandsma connected philosophical-theological research into mysticism with social engagement. The aim of this research is to design a framework for in-company projects and innovative education and training activities

2. Design-oriented research

This type of research aims to develop and innovate an education and training offer. Education and training activities and in-company projects are initiated that tie in with current themes such as meaning, identity, moral formation and life orientation.

We already cooperate with various partners in care and education (Carmel College Foundation, Verus and other partners). The coming period will be marked by expansion to other partners and relevant sectors.

The results from these initiatives will be included in philosophical-theological and qualitative-empirical research.
