Muslims’ gender values are not nearly as uniform as is often suggested. Islamic religiosity and time spent in Europe shape views on gender, but shape different gendered issues in varying ways, according to a study by Saskia Glas published today in the journal Social Forces. Her research suggests that the current integration policy does not always contribute to solutions.

If companies want to more efficiently limit the risks of cyberattacks, they should invest smarter rather than more. Many organisations currently still mainly select their investments based on past information, but choosing a flexible approach based on system dynamics would provide ample space for improvement. This is the point made by Sander Zeijlemaker, who will obtain his PhD from Radboud University on 16 March.

This year's Ammodo Science Award for Groundbreaking Research in the domain of Humanities was awarded, in part, to Tamar Sharon, professor of Philosophy, Digitalization and Society at Radboud University and her colleagues at iHub. They receive the award for their research into the impact of digitalisation on public values.

The Catholic Church announced today that Pope Francis will canonise Nijmegen's Titus Brandsma (1881-1942). Brandsma was Rector Magnificus and Professor of Philosophy at Radboud University – known then as the Catholic University of Nijmegen. He died in Dachau concentration camp, some six months after he had been arrested by the Nazis for his resistance to National Socialism. In 2005, he was voted Nijmegen’s Greatest Citizen of All Time.

Radboud University and energy network company Alliander will collaborate intensively over the next two years. On 1 March, the two organisations will sign a declaration of intent with the aim of better aligning research, education and the professional field, thus providing the best possible support for the energy transition.

Ioannis Sechopoulos, researcher at the Department of Imaging of the Radboudumc, receives a Vici grant of 1.5 million euros. He will conduct research into improving tomosynthesis, an X-ray examination that radiologists use to detect breast cancer. Improvement of the technique should lead to less unnecessary follow-up examinations during population screening, and clearer analysis of tumours before and after treatment.

Jeroen van der Laak has been appointed Professor of Computational Pathology at the Radboudumc / Radboud University as of 1 February 2022. He develops artificial intelligence (AI) for the analysis of digitized tissue sections. In this way, he improves the accuracy of diagnostics within pathology, makes patient care more efficient, and ensures that high-quality analysis is also available in places where that expertise is lacking.
