Prof. Ans van Kemenade studies the phenomenon of language change, historically as well as in the world around us. How and why does language change? What happens when speakers of different languages or dialects come into contact? How can language change be best described and explained? What is the interaction between linguistic and historical-social factors? Van Kemenade's research group is engaged in projects on language change and language contact in the recent and older history of English and Dutch. The emphasis is on the relation between language contact, language variation and language change.
