Curriculum Vitae

Rosalie van Zelm is assistant professor at the department of environmental science. In 2005 she graduated from the University of Twente as an environmental engineer. Rosalie wrote a PhD thesis (pdf, 2,3 MB) on the development of renewed LCIA methods and impact indicators on an endpoint level. The focus was on ozone and particulate matter formation causing human health damage, and terrestrial acidification, groundwater extraction, and freshwater ecotoxicity causing ecosystem damage. The renewed and improved methods in the PhD thesis make it possible to present potential damage in terms of loss of healthy life years or loss of biodiversity. The research contributed to the discussion whether information on potential damage can be obtained in such a way that it is applicable in environmental life cycle assessments. After completing her PhD she continued with a PostDoc, focusing on land use impacts. From 2011 onwards, Rosalie continued as an assistant professor in this research field.

Research focus

Overall, the research can be summarized in three main topics:

1) including new impact categories in LCIA, expanding the method focus per impact category and  advance methods onto a global scale by combining various data and methods outside the LCA field. At the moment a focus is on land use.

2) identifying, quantifying and applying uncertainty and variability estimations in life cycle (impact) assessment. This involves uncertainty quantification by means of probabilistic modeling, model improvements, variability assessments and quantification of trade-offs between different types of uncertainty as well as between uncertainty and variability.

3) method development within a circular economy context and sustainability assessment. This includes impacts of biofuels and circular wastewater treatment plant technologies.

The LCIA research is carried out within various EU projects, i.e. kp7 projects LC-IMPACT, PROSUITE and TOX-TRAIN, and H2020 project RELIEF.
