Characterizing agrochemical transformation products with Syngenta

Researchers at HFML-FELIX and Syngenta (Jealott’s Hill International Research Centre) have used FELIX to demonstrate the differentiation of hydroxylated derivatives of two plant protection compounds (azoxystrobin and benzovindiflupyr) contained at low levels in relevant plant matrices This work has now been published in the journal Environmental Science & Technology.

The development of plant protection compounds involves the characterization of potential environmental transformation products (and other possible related compounds) in order to understand the toxicity profiles and persistence in the environment. However, correctly identifying isomer(s) remains a challenge using currently applied analytical methodologies. In this study, we demonstrated the application of infrared ion spectroscopy as an orthogonal tandem mass spectrometry technique that combines the sensitivity and selectivity of LC-MS analysis with molecular structure identification using infrared spectroscopy. We have shown that this approach has the potential to significantly improve the current analytical workflow and could lead to improved agrochemical byproduct identification.
