To switch or not to switch, that is the question

Researchers from FELIX Laboratory and the Institute of Molecules and Materials (IMM) have disentangled the physics of single-shot all-optical magnetic switching in the recently-discovered ferrimagnet manganese-ruthenium-gallium (MRG). Along with collaborators from Ireland they have experimentally revealed the pulse- and temperature-dependent limits of the switching process, and these findings in turn allow us to deduce the underlying physics. Their results have been published as a Rapid Communication in Physical Review Research.

By testing magnetic switching in MRG as a function of wavelength, pulse duration and starting temperature, the researchers created state maps, yielding the necessary insight to understand the switching process.
