RE:PLACE - Transforming urban ecosystems

A participatory Honourslab on creating place-based, sustainable societal impact

Course Outline

RE:PLACE starts from the premise that we live in the Anthropocene, in a time of a Climate Crisis. Transforming places and their communities is one of the ways to a healthier relationship with our planet and ourselves. As such, RE:PLACE focuses on urban ecosystems. It highlights RE:GENERATING, RE:IMAGINING and RE:DESIGNING places of meaning (for all) in the city of Nijmegen.

Regeneration means building the capacity and capability of the people and processes, in order to understand, care about, and co-evolve with the living systems that we are a part of. Reimagining is to co-create new narratives and imaginaries of urban ecosystems. Redesigning is about the practical design and implementation of place-based and ecological solutions to eco-social problems.

Students from all disciplines are invited to partake in RE:PLACE. The course aims to create societal and sustainable impact with a place-based and experiential approach, where the learning happens in the city of Nijmegen. Together with local partners, participants will be working on group projects that transform Nijmegen towards a more sustainable and regenerative city. Participants will reach out to, collaboratively design, and implement small group interventions that have the potential for creating a regenerative urban ecosystem. In the processes of regenerating, reimagining, and redesigning community building is going to be key.

Course Goals
In this course participants will learn:
  • Place-based, regenerative societal impact creation
  • Ecological and place consciousness
  • To create new narratives and imaginaries of change-making
  • Transdisciplinary cooperation and problem solving
  • How to work in transdisciplinary teams on wicked eco-social problems
  • Theories and methodologies of: Deep Ecology, Eco-philosophy, Theory-U, Systems Thinking, Regeneration, Creative and Artistic methods for eco-social change making
  • Community building
