Visual storytelling with video

Visual storytelling is getting more and more important in the academic world. A videoclip can make complex information accessible for a broad or targeted audience. The combination of auditive and visual information is a powerful tool to make a connection between the viewer and your subject.

Millions of people upload videos on a daily basis on any possible subject. But why is one video informative and entertaining while another is forgotten immediately? Making an effective video is a structured process of design, creativity and technique.

In this practical module, you will be working in a group on a short videoclip. During this module we will dive into all the aspects of making a videoclip like choosing a suitable subject, working with scripts and of course the technical aspects. We will also be discussing the different styles of video and how they relate to their content.

Lecturers
Kees Oerlemans is a multimedia and education specialist. He supports teachers at the Radboud University in making video materials for their courses and is coordinator of the Radboud knowledge clips studio. Kees also support teachers and students in educational settings where multimedia and video are used as means for assessment.

Gideon Kessler is a filmmaker and content creator at the Radboud University.
In 2013 he started his company Kesslr Motion and made videocontent for companies, corporate events and musicfestivals internationally. During his study at the social academy he taught filmmaking to young people at schools and neighborhoods with socio-economic challenges. Since 2019 he is creating engaging Kennisclips and promotional videocontent for the Radboud University.

Assessment
The last session of this module is used for viewing the finished video’s and formulating constructive feedback. We will be using the different anchors in the design process as criteria for evaluation.

Materials
• At least one of the group members needs to have access to a laptop for editing
• Suggestions for free editing software will be provided
• You don’t need a special video camera, your smartphone can be used as camera and microphone.
