Synchronising SURFdrive with files on your desktop computer, laptop etc.

With SURFdrive, you can synchronise files that are stored in the cloud with a folder on your computer (or laptop, smartphone etc.). However, this is only possible if a so-called SURFdrive-sync client is installed on the device.

Installing SURFdrive-sync client on ISC-managed computer

The SURFdrive-sync client can be installed from the so-called 'Software Center', but only on ISC-managed computers. You can do so by clicking the start button (with Windows icon), then Software Center. Select ‘SURFdrive’ and click ‘Install’.

Installing SURFdrive-sync client on other computer, laptop etc.

You can download and install the software here if you are an RU employee but you do not have an ISC-managed computer or if you (also) wish to install the SURFdrive software on a device other than a desktop computer (laptop, tablet, smartphone). Please note: select a different storage folder than the default folder (see 'After the installation'). There is software available for Windows, iOs, Android and Linux.

After the installation

By default, cloud stored files (SURFdrive) are synchronised with a folder on the C-drive (hard disk). This folder is created during the configuration process. It is possible to select a different location/folder during the configuration process or at a later time. Please note:

  • Do not use the D-drive for the synchronisation of files with the SURFcloud. The D-drive can also be accessed by others who log on to the same computer using their own u-number and RU password.
  • Should you decide to synchronise cloud stored files with files from your personal folder, please keep in mind that there are costs involved with storing files in your personal folder.
  • Files that are shared with others can be found in the ‘Shared’ folder.

Synchronising only part of the files

If you wish to exclude folders from synchronisation (to ensure, for instance, that a folder on your computer or personal folder does not reach its maximum storage capacity), then launch the SURFdrive application via the start menu (with Windows icon), click ‘Programs’ and in sequence General, Edit, Excluded files, Add, then type in the name of the file you wish to exclude from synchronisation and tick the box in front of it. We recommend that you at least do so for the ‘Shared’ folder (files shared with others).
