The combination of tandem mass spectrometry and infrared laser spectroscopy enables one to obtain IR spectra of isolated molecular ions. The free electron laser FELIX has played a prominent role in the development of infrared ion spectroscopy, a field that now constitutes one of the main application areas of FELIX. Several tandem MS platforms have been coupled to the FELIX beamline allowing one not only to study just the spectroscopy of molecular ions, but also to derive information on molecular structure,ion coordination and dissociation chemistry. I will give a brief overview of selected recent studies with relevance to physical, analytical as well as astro-chemistry.
