Theme 2 colloquium: 'Developing Molecular Tools to Decode and Perturb Glycan Dynamics in the Human Gut Microbiome' (Lecture)

Dr. Tom Wennekes (Chemical Glycobiology, Utrecht University)
Research of the past decade into the human microbiome has reshaped the paradigm of our health and disease. In order to advance further, the time has arrived to understand it at a molecular level. Glycans dominate the microbiota-host interface and are thus ideally positioned to modulate these complex interactions. In my research group we use a combination of synthetic chemistry and chemical biology approaches to unravel this glycobiology. This seminar will provide an overview of the tailor-made molecular tools that are being developed to profile and perturb these complex glycans and their interacting proteins at the human gut-microbiota interface.
