dr. Joaquín Fernández-Rossier (International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory, Braga, Portugal)
In this colloquium I will give a perspective on the emerging field of magnetic 2D crystals. This field is booming after the discovery of the first stand alone 2D crystals with ferromagnetic order in 2017.
I will address discuss several theoretical questions: why is magnetic order possible in these 2D systems? How can we control the magnetic properties using field effect?
What are the properties of their collective modes? How can transport and optics be used to probe these new systems?
What new electronic phases can emerge in van der Waals structures that incorporate ferromagnetic 2D crystals?
