Colloidal suspensions, in which particles with a typical size between ~1 nm and several μm are dispersed in a molecular solvent, have attracted the interest of scientists for many decades. This is partly due to the fact that colloids are widely accepted as a versatile model system for atoms and molecules as their phase behaviour is analogous to that of atomic and molecular systems. In addition, colloids exhibit rich and interesting behaviour in their own right, and also find numerous uses in various industrial and technological applications. The typical colloidal length (μm) and time (seconds) scales make it possible to directly observe colloidal particles in real-time using optical microscopy. At the same time, the chemical and physical properties of the particles can be controlled using colloid chemistry techniques, allowing for the development of unique colloidal model systems.

Recently, our group 'Physical Chemistry of Soft Matter' has joined the IMM, and in this colloquium I will introduce our group and our research interests, which lie in the broad field of soft matter with an emphasis on these colloidal systems. A key point in our research, which sits at the interface between chemistry, physics and materials science, is that we combine the development of new colloidal particles with advanced optical manipulation and imaging techniques to study a wide range of fundamental problems in condensed matter science. Examples include banana-shaped liquid crystals, grain boundaries in crystals, two-dimensional melting and synchronisation in driven systems. In this talk, I will present a brief overview of our experimental techniques, ongoing work and plans for future research.
