Theme 1 seminar: 'Cryogenic Ion Spectroscopy of Biochromophores' (Lecture)

J. Mathias Weber (JILA and University of Colorado, Boulder, USA)
My group is studying the structure, microsolvation behavior, and intrinsic photophysics of molecular ions in vacuo. We prepare such ions by electrospray ionization, cool them in a cryogenic ion trap, and mass-select them in a time-of-flight mass spectrometer, and use photodissociation spectroscopy to probe their properties. I will present some of our latest results on the behavior of some chromophore molecules that are relevant to bioluminescence, including the chromophore of the green fluorescent protein and biliverdin.
