PPIMM Career Event (Workshop)

Monday 10 May 2021Add to my calendar
15:00 to
Online; in Zoom (you receive the Zoom meeting link after registration)

Are you exploring the next step in your career? Are you curious about jobs outside of academia? Get inspired by the online career event organised by the PhD Panel IMM (PPIMM)!

PPIMM invites you to the interactive online PPIMM Career Event on the 10th of May 2021, 15.00-16.30. In this session there will be several PhD alumni who have continued their career outside of academia and you will have the chance to ask them any (career) questions you like. The Alumni come from several backgrounds and disciplines and have chosen different professions. To learn more about them, we will have an interactive discussion on a few statements. Moreover, you will exchange experiences with fellow students.

Programme 10 May

15.00 Opening by PPIMM
15.10 Panel discussion
15.30 Get-your-own-coffee-break
15.35 Breakout rooms with panel members
16.20 Wrap up & Evaluation
16.30 End of session

Panel members

In breakout rooms you can talk to the panel members in seperate sessions. On registration you can indicate your preference for a panel member by marking 1-4 (1=top choice, 4=lowest choice). We will do our best to schedule according your preference, but we can not guarantee this. We aim for an equal distribution over all panel members.

The Panel members are:

  • Sjoerd Postma - Patent Attorney @ V.O. Patents & Trademarks
I studied Molecular Life Sciences at Radboud University with a strong focus on organic chemistry and molecular biology. Afterwards, I did a PhD in physical organic chemistry with Wilhelm Huck on constructing enzymatic reaction networks, defending my thesis in 2018. I realized that I was too clumsy to stay in the lab, so I wanted to combine my love for (bio)chemistry, writing, and law in a desk job. With that in mind, I recently finished my legal training and was sworn in as a patent attorney. Now, I help clients to obtain patent protection and answer patent-related questions.
  • Daniel Bakker - Researcher Energy & Water @ KWR Water Research Institute
I’ve studied applied physics at the Technical University of Eindhoven, with a specialization in beam and radiation physics. I then completed my PhD at the FELIX Laboratory of the IMM, where I studied far-infrared spectroscopic methods for molecular beams, while trying to find the fingerprints of hydrogen bond interactions. After defending my thesis in 2017 I started working at CCS Energy-advice, a commercial consultancy firm in Deventer. At CCS I worked on online tooling, compliance, production of renewable energy, energy saving etc. I’ve learned a lot about professional work life at CCS, becoming team lead in the 3,5 years I worked there. Quite recently I’ve made another step in my career, joining the KWR Water Research Institute as researcher starting April 1st 2021. I’ve love to discuss my career learnings and thoughts with you, so join us at the PPIMM event!
  • Jonas Becker - Product Owner @ ASML
I studied physics, first at TU Berlin and later at Radboud University, finishing my M.Sc. in 2011. My PhD project was shared between two groups, the ultrafast spectroscopy group and the High field Magnet Laboratory. Not surprisingly then, I worked on ultrafast laser induced magnetization dynamics in high magnetic fields. After finishing my PhD in 2015, I did a one year post-doc (also at Radboud) and in December 2016 was hired by ASML where I currently work as a Product Owner on the EUV source. My previous roles at ASML include Optics Design Engineer and Module Architect.
  • Alejandra Riesco Dominguez - Scientist @ Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson & Johnson
I was born in Salamanca (Spain) where I received my Master’s degree in Pharmacy. Then, I enrolled for a second Master’s in Organic Chemistry at University Complutense de Madrid. In 2013, I obtained a Marie Skłodowska-Curie scholarship and moved to the Netherlands to do her PhD in the Synthetic Organic Chemistry group at Radboud University (Nijmegen). I worked on a project based on the synthesis of fluorine-containing nitrogen-based heterocycles under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Floris Rutjes and Dr. Daniel Blanco Ania. Later on, I joined the group of Dr. Martin Feiters in collaboration with TropIQ, as a postdoctoral researcher in the field of antimalarials. In January 2019, I started my career in industry at Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson&Johnson (Belgium) where I now work as a scientist at the Chemical Process R&D Department.
