What is it, doctor?

Analytical Chemistry and Paediatrics, UMC St. Radboud

May-July, 2005
For everyone who has ever watched an episode of House or similar television series, it is clear how important the results from the lab are in diagnosing diseases. In many cases, a disease leads to atypical concentrations of metabolites in blood or other body fluids. Judy Fonville has investigated NMR spectra of cerebrospinal fluid using chemometrics, to distinguish between different diseases. She has shown that the spectral window between 0.5 and 1.5 ppm can be used to distinguish between patiens with different diseases such as MS, Alzheimer, Canavan's disease and Gehrig's disease.
