The ERC Conference on Rewriting Global Orthodoxy: Oriental Orthodox Communities in a Transnational World, 25-27 January 2024, focuses on the textual and visual culture as a (differentiated) religioscape that binds oriental Christian communities together, at the local, national and regional – European – level, as well as on the transnational level, connecting the communities in home and host countries.

Christos Veskoukis has been selected as a scholarship recipient from the Institute of Eastern Christian Studies. He is a final-year doctoral candidate in Theology at the University of Exeter, where he is researching the concepts of freedom and sin in the works of John Chrysostom (c. 347-407) and Nikolai Berdyaev (1874-1948). He holds a BA in Eastern Orthodox Theology from the University of Athens (Greece) and two master’s degrees, one in Philosophy of Religion and Ethics from the University of Birmingham (UK) and one in Systematic Theology from Radboud University (Netherlands).

On Friday 16 June 2023, the Institute for Eastern Christian Studies (IvOC) celebrates the first anniversary of the Platform Oosters Christendom. The Platform was launched on 10 June 2022 and in a year’s time has grown into a lively and up-to-date website, full with new articles and opinion pieces on the theme of Eastern Christianity. Former Platform editor Nick Pouls handed over the reigns to our new editor Christel Jansen. Besides being the editor, she also produces the bi-monthly Platform newsletter.

IvOC is pleased to welcome Dmitry Biriukov to the institute as a visiting scholar this Spring. Biriukov got his Master’s degree in physics at St Petersburg Polytechnical University (2001) and his BA in Religious Studies (summa cum laude) at St Petersburg School of Religion and Philosophy (2004). Thereafter he received the degree of Candidate of Philosophical Sciences in St Petersburg State University (2007) and a PhD in philosophy at Padova University (2016).
