A short summary of the project:

Heleen Murre-van den Berg - Oriental Christianity in Europe

In her project ‘Rewriting Global Orthodoxy: Oriental Christianity in Europe between 1970 and 2020’, Heleen Murre-van den Bert goes looking for the issues and tensions for communities that are the result of the often-forced migration and recent settlement of churches from North-eastern Africa (Coptic, Ethiopian, Eritrean) and the Middle-East (Syrian-Orthodox, Armenian) to Europe. Written and electronic texts play an important role in the contemporary articulation of the religious legacy and its transfer to the next generations. By studying these texts, ranging from grammar books to catechism books, from historical studies to liturgy books, and from saints' stories to theological studies, in a daily context, this project aims to better understand the position of Eastern and Oriental churches in the Netherlands and Europe. Particular attention is paid to the mutual exchange between Eastern and Oriental Orthodox churches, against the background of the growth and revival of Orthodox Christianity in Europe and the rest of the world.
