In our series Verkenningen Oosters Christendom, we have published Theo van Lint's lecture in Dutch on Grigor Narekatsi's Book of Lamentations, which he held November 2019 at our institute.

In this booklet, Theo Maarten van Lint, Calouste Gulbenkian Professor of Armenian Studies at Oxford University since 2002, discusses the religious and literary masterpiece of the tenth-century mystic and church teacher Grigor Narekatsi (c. 950 - 1003).

Against the background of its immediate surroundings, the school of the Narek Monastery on the south bank of Lake Van in the Kingdom of Vaspurakan, and of the Armenian Christian and literary traditions, light is shed on Narekatsi's oeuvre, with special attention to the Book of Lamentations, simply called the Narek, a literary and spiritual masterpiece consisting of 95 poem prayers. It also discusses the topicality of Grigor Narekatsi and his spiritual and literary legacy.
