Visiting scholar Dr. Daria Elagina comes to IvOC
The Institute of Eastern Christian Studies (IvOC) is pleased to announce the arrival of a new visiting scholar, Dr. Daria Elagina, from 1 to 31 March 2023. Dr. Elagina has an academic background in Ethiopian philology, manuscriptology, and textual criticism. Elagina holds a Bachelor’s degree in Ethiopian Studies from the Faculty of Asian and African Studies, Saint-Petersburg State University, and a Master and PhD in Ethiopian Studies from the University of Hamburg (Asian-African Institute). During the last few years she has also garnered experience in digital humanities.
Dr. Elagina is currently working on her individual project dedicated to the study of the Chronicle of John of Nikiu, 'Chronicle of John of Nikiu: Text-Critical Edition and Digital Research Platform’, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). She is also a lecturer at the University of Hamburg, Germany.
As part of her stay at IvOC, she will work on the aspects of the origin, transition, and transformation of the Chronicle of John of Nikiu. Different stages of the textual transmission of the Chronicle coincide with periods of challenges and threats to the Eastern Christian communities of Egypt and Ethiopia. She aims to study how these periods are reflected in the text and discuss the problems of textual transmission, preservation, and reception of this text in the broader context of Eastern Christianity.
During her month-long stay at the institute, she will give a lecture on "The origin, transformation, and reception of the Chronicle of John of Nikiu". Details of the lecture and how the public can attend will be made available at a later date. More details of Dr. Elagina’s background and activities can be found in her CV (pdf, 78 kB).
