European Immigration Law

Semester I

Where does European immigration law come from? How did it develop? Who are immigrants and how are their rights in law different from citizens of the Union?

This course is designed to provide students with substantive knowledge and understanding of the increasing European Union engagement with immigration law. The course will look at the competences of the Union as regards immigration of EU nationals and those from third countries. It will analyse the existing law and application and the developments.

The focus of the course will be on the rights and duties deriving from EU Law of individuals who are seeking or have already moved from one state to another whether that be from their state of origin to a Member State or among the Member States. The process of making EU law and its results in the field and the law making power retained by the Member States will be considered in this light of the individual's perspective.
