Date of news: 14 May 2019

omslag boekIn the run-up to the elections of the European Parliament on 23 May 2019 the essay bundle ‘Europa, Europa’ was recently published by Boom. The book contains a critical analysis of the current state of the EU, and a varied series of thoughts and suggestions for the further development of the Union. Three of the contributions included were written by lawyers affiliated with the Faculty of Law of Radboud University.

Professor of International and European Law Henri de Waele writes about the legitimacy of the Parliament and the possibilities for strengthening supranational democracy. Assistant Professor Constitutional Law Suzanne Poppelaars sheds light on financial contributions to the EU, budget law and the legal space for the introduction of new European taxes. Tineke Strik, Associate Professor of Migration Law, takes a look at European asylum policy, the unrealised ambitions in that area, and underlines the need for greater coherence, more responsibility and better protection of human rights.

The initiative for the bundle was taken by the Montesquieu Institute, in which the universities of Nijmegen, Leiden, Maastricht and Groningen collaborate.
