Avoid copyright issues with "proxy link"

Date of news: 13 February 2023

Sharing books and articles with students via a proxy link ensures that you are not violating copyright: it allows students to view publications from a workspace off campus by logging in with their S number. You put the proxy link before the link to the article or book.

Creating a proxylink

Creating a proxy link from the link of e.g. an e-book is easy: place https://ru.idm.oclc.org/login?Url=  before the link to the e-book. So in the case of this copy: https://ebookcentral.proquest.com/lib/ubnru-ebooks/detail.action?docID=29731896 the proxy link will be: https://ru.idm.oclc.org/login?Url=https://ebookcentral.proquest.com/lib/ubnru-ebooks/detail.action?docID=29731896

Referring to mandatory study literature as e-books

More and more mandatory literature is also available as e-books. All of these e-books are listed in this libguide. The proxy link to use for the book is already listed.

Copyright agreement

Dutch universities have an arrangement with Foundation UvO (UvO = Uitgeversorganisatie voor Onderwijslicenties: 'publishers organisation for educational licenses’). As a result, teachers do not have to ask permission for every single article or chapter they want to share. However, this cannot be unlimited. Violating the limits raises costs for all universities.

A brief summary of what is and isn't covered can be found in this PDF.
