Reuse of publications in education
Dutch universities have an agreement on the sharing of articles, book chapters and other publications with the UvO Foundation (Publishers' Organization for Educational Licenses). This way you don't have to ask the copyright owner's permission for every publication. It is important to keep to these agreements.
Proxy-link: always okay
Below you find a summary of the agreement. The easiest way to share a digital publication to which the library has a subscription, is with a proxy link. This way students or employees will see a login screen when off campus. With their S or U number they log in and get access. In this way you work within the agreements.
Creating a proxylink is easy: put http://ru.idm.oclc.org/login?url= in front of the link to the publication. Example: you want to refer to this e-book: https://doi.org/10.4324/9781003190516 . The link you place in Brightspace will become: http://ru.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://doi.org/10.4324/9781003190516. (The link does not necessarily have to be a DOI, though this is the most practical option: that link will never change.)
Summary of the agreement
These conditions count for both printed and digital material on Brightspace.
-
Use up to a maximum of 50 pages of a publication you are using for educational purposes.
-
No more than 25% of the entire work. In case of an article: no more than 25% of the journal issue.
-
Use may not be 'stacked', i.e. distributing parts from the same publication across multiple readers for the same course.
Always allowed
-
A link to the fulltext from a legitimate supplier (i.e. no Sci-Hub).
-
Reuse of open access publications.
This is e.g. fulltext from the Radboud Repository or other university repositories. -
Fulltext with a Creative Commons license or with the OA logo.
-
Information from the government and the judiciary.
-
Sometimes reuse is permitted within the subscription licence. Check with our verification tool (Dutch only): www.ru.nl/ubn/verificatietool.
-
Use in presentations in teaching rooms is allowed by Dutch copyright law. However, bear in mind you cannot just add the presentation in Brightspace afterwards! In that case, the conditions of the agreement count.
Violation of the agreement
UvO will check three universities yearly to see if they keep to the agreement. If not, the price for all universities will go up. So it's important to stick to these conditions.
Tip: mandatory study literature that is available as e-book can be found in this LibGuide and the corresponding proxy links for each e-book are already given.
