Economics and Business Economics Student Awarded Scholarship from Yenching Academy

Date of news: 16 June 2022

Economics and Business Economics Student Koen Smeets is the first Radboud University student to be directly admitted to the prestigious Yenching Academy of Peking University. The Yenching Academy was created with the idea of fostering global connections and a global dialogue, and so has a high percentage of international students from universities such as Stanford, Oxford, Yale and Harvard.

“There are three reasons why I wish to do an interdisciplinary Master’s degree in China Studies at the Yenching Academy,” says Koen. “Firstly, as a Yenching Scholar, you become a member of a community consisting of driven, fascinating and unique people. I feel honoured to have been accepted as a member. Secondly, the programme offers the opportunity to select your own disciplinary and research focus, go on (research) trips throughout China, and partake in all kinds of awesome extracurriculars such as clubs and congresses. Thirdly, the programme comes with a full scholarship, consisting of tuition fee, room and board on campus, and even a monthly stipend!”

After completing the Master’s programme, Koen is hoping to do either another Master’s or his PhD or work at a technology or consultancy company in Asia, America or Europe. “Since this programme offers the opportunity to choose your own disciplinary and research focus, I can combine my interest in China with Science and Technology Studies. More specifically, I hope to focus on China’s national innovation system, its capacity for indigenous innovation, and the socioeconomic impact of such innovation,” says Koen.

The Nijmegen School of Management congratulates Koen Smeets on his scholarship at Yenching Academy.
