NSM Focus | Career orientation: how can you help students as alumnus?

Career orientation is an important focus point in our study programmes. Therefore, Nijmegen School of Management offers an alumni-coach programme for various specialisations, in which an alumnus is matched with a student.

As a student, you get the opportunity to shadow someone one-to-one in an interesting professional field, to attend one or more meetings or to participate in a working visit on location. At the same time, the alumnus will scout new talent that may be interesting for the organisation. Spatial Planning Master’s student Corné Brouwers took part in the programme: “I wasn’t sure if I wanted to work in government. Thanks to the Buddy Programme, I was matched with an alumnus at the Municipality of Oisterwijk. It gave me a lot of insight and I really enjoyed my day. Now I know that this is the right path for me.”

An alumni-coach programme offers appealing opportunities for theLotte Vogel International Students as well. Alumnus Lotte de Vogel, brand manager at Coty, gave tips such as how to apply to a company in the Netherlands, and ways to improve your CV. Lotte strongly agrees with the points mentioned by Corné: “As a student, you are looking for a place that suits you, and the guest speakers and sessions with people from the business world gave me, as a student, a push in the right direction. Contacts in the field of your choice are crucial and this is why I wanted to do something in return for the current students.”
