Summer or Winter School
Summer or Winter Schools are a great opportunity if you would like to have a taste of how it feels like to be an exchange students before venturing away for a whole semester, or if you would rather study abroad for a shorter period. A Summer/Winter School offers you a unique opportunity to broaden your horizons, to make new international friends, and in many cases it even allows you to get missing credits!
To keep in mind
- The language of instruction: in many cases is the language of the country, this is the case in most South-European countries.
- Application deadline for the Summer School at the host institution. In most cases ‘first come, first serve’ applies. Make sure you apply in time!
- Although it is often possible to receive a 'short stay grant' from the faculty or another institution, there are still some costs you will have to pay yourself as the grants are not full-funding grants. Be prepared.
- For Summer/Winter programmes offered in the United States, keep in mind that fees and travel expenses can be fairly high.
Where can I go?
Many universities offer Summer programmes, which usually take place between June and/or August, and vary in duration from 1 week to 6 weeks. Winter programmes usually take place between November and March.
Although students are expected to search for summer/winter schools themselves, the IMO has made a list with some suggestions for Summer/Winter schools. Please be aware that IMO cannot vouch for the content or quality of these courses nor be held accountable for this. Does this list not contain the university or destination you had in mind? Have a look at the website of Radboud International for other suggestions and special offers. You can also take a look at the website from Nuffic or Europe Summer School.
