The IMR has a matrix structure (see figure below): researchers are employed within departments, and can commit (part of) their research time by participating in the activities of a Hot Spot. However, not all researchers are member of a Hot Spot; that depends on the fit of their research expertise and the focus of the Hot Spots. New Hot Spots may be established in the future, while ‘old’ Hot Spots may cease to exist. That way the IMR can continue to develop new and innovative research.
