Becoming a PhD candidate

At the Institute for Management Research (as is the case for all Dutch universities), a PhD degree can be pursued either as an internal or an external PhD candidate. The skills required for both categories of PhD candidates are identical, and their doctoral degrees are equally valued and appreciated; the distinction between the two types of PhD candidates lies in their formal relationship with the faculty.

Internal PhD candidates are employed by the faculty. When funding becomes available for a new PhD research project (which is often proposed and developed by the eventual PhD supervisor(s)), a PhD vacancy is placed on the university website, as well as on www.academictransfer.com (the Dutch portal for academic vacancies). The recruitment and selection process for the PhD position then proceeds as is the case for any vacancy.

There is no fixed number of yearly PhD positions, and each such vacancy is posted once a funded PhD research project becomes available.

External PhD candidates are not employed by the faculty but conduct their research under the supervision of one or more IMR researchers. As they receive no salary from the faculty, they need to provide their own income during the PhD trajectory.

Some external PhD candidates carry out their research part time while being employed by another organization (thus, providing their own income). Others obtain scholarships or stipends from national or international organizations; depending on the funding provided by the scholarship, they may carry out their research full time.

The IMR does not offer scholarships or stipends for external PhD candidates. Instead, interested candidates are encouraged to find such financing options via scholarship websites, such as Grant FinderResearch Professional and FindAPhd, or by applying for the grants and subsidies outlined by the PhD Network Netherlands and by Radboud University’s International Office.
