Sustainable democracy

Drawing from Comparative Politics, Political Sociology, and Political Theory, scholars in this research group focus on the legitimacy challenges facing contemporary advanced democracies, among which the crisis of representation and the impact of of inequality and climate change for democratic legitimacy and stability. Scholars in this research group also focus on democratic innovations that can improve the quality of representation and make democracy more sustainable. They address both empirical and normative dimensions of this problem. Participating scholars are internationally recognized as experts in the fields of populism, democratic reform, organized interest representation, green political theory, radical democratic theory, institutional trust, civil society, social media, and urban political theory.
